Building the perfect arrangement

Updated: 12 minutes ago

A story of personal growth, petals and saying yes.

Building the perfect flower arrangement is a little like personal development and continuous learning...

You start with a vision, some creativity, and a handful of stems. Over time you learn balance, structure and confidence. Some flowers come naturally, others take patience and practice. Every addition teaches you something new and every arrangement becomes richer because of the experience behind it.

I love learning from others. Podcasts, books, tutorials, socials… all offer inspiration and ideas. But for me, in person learning is always the most special.

There’s something about being immersed in creativity, asking questions, seeing techniques up close and sharing the experience with others that just can’t be replicated.

So this year, in a wonderfully impulsive moment, I booked myself onto a Flower Retreat.

I’d always imagined doing a yoga retreat for a bit of me time… although I worried it might all be a little too healthy and I’d end up quietly starving without wine and nibbles.

But a few days surrounded by flowers galore, friendly faces, a beautiful setting and the chance to learn from floral legends I’ve admired and followed for years?

Well… why wouldn’t you?

Go on, spoil yourself. It’s your birthday weekend too.

And I’m so glad I did.

From start to finish, The Flower Retreat was incredible. The journey from Wales to York went smoothly and we were welcomed with fizz and friendly faces on arrival. There was such a wonderful mix of florists, from those just beginning their floral journey to more seasoned creatives generously sharing their experience.

I met my fabulous room mate, the lovely Lucy @mountaindaisyfloristry from Scotland. So warm, friendly and supportive, sharing tips of the trade so freely and enthusiastically encouraging everyone around her. One of those people who reminds you that confidence often grows through community.

The itinerary was packed and absolutely didn’t disappoint.

Sue McCleary @passionflowersue the master of floral wearables, was everything you’d hope for and more. Exceptionally talented, incredibly humble, endlessly patient and with such a passion for creating the most amazing structural headpieces and bridal bouquets.

Under Sue’s guidance we set about creating our own wearable florals. A real challenge at times, but such a joy to learn new skills and stretch my creativity. Seeing my creations beautifully modelled by Beth @insta_ginge and captured by Natasha @natashacadman made it all feel even more special.

Then came Sophie Powell @u.fl.o.london the queen of blooming beautiful headdresses and a refreshingly honest, gentle and mischievous legend.

Together we created a fabulously fun tablescape and installation, transforming a dining space through teamwork, colour and creativity. Surrounded by colourful @by_spode tableware, @twizzellengland linens and an abundance of joyful blooms, I loved working on the installation and creating a backdrop packed full of flowers and foliage.

We also created our own wildly beautiful bowls during a workshop with Graeme Corbett @bloomandburn who shared his signature approach to arrangements guided by seasonality, local blooms, experimentation and the importance of capturing your work through photography.

So friendly, honest and generous with his knowledge and I loved hearing about his recently published book Life in Bloom.

The food and drinks deserve their own mention.

@chefbenmoore absolutely spoiled us with the most delicious vegan dishes, every plate looking as beautiful as it tasted and perfectly complementing the stunning setting at @priory_cottages and the fantastic @leafycouture retreat experience.

So… two days immersed in flowers and surrounded by a whole bouquet of florists.

And I absolutely loved it.

Not because I came home transformed into the perfect florist.

But because I came home inspired.

With new techniques, fresh ideas, more confidence and...

a reminder that the perfect arrangement, much like personal growth, is never really finished.

You keep adding stems.

You keep learning.

You keep creating.

And over time, something beautiful takes shape.

A gorgeous creative skills boost for Polly Bunson.

Forever grateful. Thank you all xxx
